Zuleika Country House - Accommodation in
Hoedspruit near Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province,
South Africa
The
Drakensberg mountain range errupts magnificently from the horizon
forming the lip of the Blyde River Canyon, the third largest in the
world. The mountains are just a few kilometres past the end of

Hoedspruit near Kruger National Park, Limpopo Province, South Africa
and the view warrants a good glug of wine at sunset while you are
seated on the wooden deck - meals are also served out here. You can
either venture off to the dam at the base of the canyon (a
twenty-minute drive) where you will feel insignificant in the lea of
so much towering rock; or just less than an hour’s drive will put you
on top of the world overlooking the vast green-filled chasm. Zuleika
is a new venture for Altie and Lucas, and their wonderful nature
ideally suits having guests.

The
building is brand new, thatched, with built-in beds and earth-coat
concrete floors, slate bathrooms in earthy hues and wooden-stick towel
rails. Colours are rich and dusky; smoked blue, sand yellow and
terracotta red. The best room is an open-plan suite with private
balcony with view for romantic quiet evenings and listening to fish
eagles in the mornings. Altie has converted an old farm dam into an
elevated swimming pool and next to it is a thatched lapa for braais
and shade under the indigenous Marula tree. There are also two
self-catering units with wooden ceilings, tiled floors, cherry-wood
blinds and a kitchenette..
One
can go white water rafting on the tumultuous river, or hike down the
canyon slopes to watch the cormorants and observe and hear the lake's
vociferous hippo population, or go on a cruise. Birdspotting
expeditions with a local expert in the canyon's higher reaches can be
organised. Or, reaching still higher, for truly panoramic views: how
about a hot air balloon expedition ? Of course, there are numerous
game drives in the Kruger by day and night, you can go horse riding in
the bush, or how about a game of golf at the Drakensig golf course ?
