Witmos Oxwagons - Accommodation in Amakhala
Game Reserve, Eastern Cape. A Voortrekker would instantly recognize the
authentic canvas-covered wagons but perhaps not the giraffe-setting or
the trimmings of comfort, even luxury, that have been woven into the
camp. Beds are enticing these days with cotton linen and down duvets,
which are – like magic – toasty when the night air is cold, but cool
on hot nights. In the modern mode of things, each wagon has its own
private bathroom down the wooden steps, just a few paces away,
lamp-lit.

Giles’s
ancestors were in the oxwagon transport business, so it is perfectly
meet and right that the wagons should come to rest on his family land
that was once sheep farm, now game reserve. And, yes, what is extra
fantastic about the camp is that just a few hundred metres away, yet
fenced off, are the giraffes, zebra, rhino, elephant and antelope of
the Amakhala Game Reserve. Sitting on the large sundeck, while
breakfasting or dining, the savannah-land and its grazing animals are
clearly visible and audible – and just a few metres away,
you will be thrilled to see a vervet monkey
with her baby. Game-drives and river-cruises are utterly recommended
and also pop in to visit Jennifer at the conservation centre. She has
a PhD in zoology and facilitates the monitoring of the game from here.
Our
hills and valleys tell silently of old conflicts and the bush holds
its secrets, but now the haunting cry of the fish eagle echoes from
the rugged krantzes and the veld grass whispers with the passing of
peaceful game, where you too can return to nature.Day activities
include game drives, canoeing, picnics and walking trails. Evenings
are spent around a campfire listening to stories of days gone by with
your hosts, the Gush family, descendants of the1820 Settlers.
