Whistletree
Lodge - Accommodation in Queenswood, Pretoria,
South Africa. Here’s a house with a tale to tell, the Victorian
setting for the scandalous and ultimately tragic love affair between
Lt. Brown and Lady Sumnerville. Throughout the house, military
portraits, excavated horseshoes and news clippings serve as the
story’s historical props. The interior is
Scottish baronial, but really he’s a cultural magpie with an eclectic
mix of colonial pieces. Impressive staircases and landings provide new
perspectives on the lofty rooms. In secluded nooks and crannies,
magazines spill from baskets at the foot of comfy armchairs.

There’s
an Art Deco cigar-room, reference library and yellowwood boardroom
where Kobus’s Pretorian family photos can be traced back five
generations. A sleek jazz bar looks out to the pool, lawns and tennis
court, and the newer bedrooms (modern comforts and antique furniture)
have views across the jacaranda trees or the floodlit koppie at the
back of the house. You can stroll here in the evenings, before
returning to a dinner prepared fresh to your tastes. The service is
distinctly old-school, attentive, discreet and instant.
The building
has been designed as a modern take on the pyramids, its sloping walls
and ecclesiastic fenestration exalting sun and sky.
Of
course this contrast between old and new is somewhat blurred, and
that’s half the fun.
Whistletree
Lodge is situated in Queenswood , one of the eastern suburbs of
Pretoria – the ideal location for people visiting the capital city of
South Africa. It is a very safe and tranquil area close to embassies,
the University of Pretoria, main shopping centres, fine restaurants,
monuments and a golf driving range.
