The Old Schoolhouse - Accommodation

We
are The Old Schoolhouse, situated 10k from Fouriesburg in the
beautiful Free State of South Africa, and being approximately 1/2
way between Johannesburg and Durban, roughly three hours from either
by car, we make an ideal stopping off point for your journey. Set
in the sunny countryside with many scenic routes and stunning views
around each corner. The sights are worthwhile both in summer
with the fields full of cosmos or in winter with the sight of snow on
the nearby Maluti mountains.

Our
guest house has four bedrooms, 2 bathrooms, a kitchen, a lounge, front
enclosed conservatory style veranda and back patio areas. This is a
self-contained house which can sleep up to 12 people (maximum) in various
combinations of singles, doubles and family rooms. There is also a bed
settee which can accommodate an extra two people. The first bedroom is a
family room with a large double bed and a set of bunks. The room is
complete with it's own en-suite bathroom with a shower, basin and toilet
facilities. The second and third bedrooms are large rooms, which can both
be setup as either double, twin or even with bunk beds ! The fourth
bedroom, although smaller, will take 2 beds as either a twin or bunk bed
arrangement. There is a cosy lounge with an original victorian fireplace
with seating for 8 people and room for extra seating to be moved in from
the conservatory style veranda if necessary. There is a large fully
equipped kitchen with a six ring cooker and oven, a fridge freezer and
all the normal kitchen equipment including cutlery and crockery for 12
people. The main bathroom contains two private and lock-able electric
showers with 2 further wash basins and 2 toilets. At the end of the
hallway, there is a cloakroom / drying room which offers additional
storage. We can provide breakfast and a range of snacks, light meals to
full dinners, all available at the main house..
There
are several places of interest in the local area: Golden Gate National
Park, Meiringskloof Nature Park where there is a swimming pool and
both short and long hikes and Saltpetrekrans which is the largest
sandstone overhang in the southern hemisphere and is still used for
ancestral worship by local tribes. There are also numerous sites of
ancient rock art locally: Heuveltop in Golden Gate, Kiara Lodge,
Schaaplaats rock art national monument, St Fort which has two shelters
with rock art and Korfshoek Rock Art shelter in Basotho Cultural
Village. In Fouriesburg there is a golf course, Meiringskloof Nature
Park, a tourist information centre, some nice old sandstone buildings
like the church, town hall and blockhouse. There are two bars, a
coffee and antiques shop and a tea garden. There is also an art
gallery and tea garden just out of town. Close by is the
Brandwater Hiking Trail which is a five day trail and commences and
ends in Meiringskloof Nature Park.
