Kimberley
developed around a huge hole in the ground that was originally a small
hill known as Colesberg Koppie. The about 365 metre deep hole is wide and
deep enough to comfprtably take two Empire State buildings on to of one
onother. Between 1871 and 1914, some 25 million tons of earth was removed
to leave the gaping hole that once yielded some 14,5 million carats of
diamonds. Other attractions include the Vaalbos National Park with its
threatened black rhino and three different habitats - Kalahari thornveld,
Karoo and grassveld (savannah).
