Arniston
is the only town in South Africa with 2 official names. The English name
Arniston derived from a British East Indiaman that was run aground with
the tragic loss of 370 lives by its Captain, in an attempt to save the
Ship on the 30th of May 1815 and the Afrikaans name Waenhuiskrans derived
from a large erosion formed sea cave. Kassiesbaai is the name of the
traditional fishing village and harbour that is now a National monument.
The Overberg is the home of the Southern Right whale, ancient rock fish
traps, the rare blue crane, the endangered Bontebok, a graveyard of ship
wrecks, the heart of the Cape Fynbos, Die Hoop and Die Mond nature
reserves, the southern tip of the continent of Africa, the longest
stretch of uninterrupted pristine white beach in the southern hemisphere
and huge wind formed sand dune systems.
