Sheblon, an intimate, thatched cottage, is a national monument near the evocatively-named Artificers Square, the city’s original artisan quarter. Jasmine, with its separate garden cottage, and Belhambra cottages are larger, but similar in charm and character.

Martie's pride and joy is the latest addition to her collection, Settlers Hill Manor. This Victorian house has been recently renovated and has shining yellowwood floors and spacious rooms with en-suite bathrooms, plus a rose garden fronting it despite the trials and tribulations of rose-planting in South Africa. The decoration throughout is a blend of original features and modern where these matter (i.e. in bathrooms and kitchens…), but the notable lack of ostentation only adds to the authenticity. You will be hard-pushed to take any of it in, however, if you attempt everything on Marthie’s Things-to-Do-in-Grahamstown list, which is as long as a man’s arm.

She loves taking people around the imposing Victorian buildings in town or to the witch-doctor shop nearby, where a Xhosa herbalist can mix you up some good luck potions. In Grahamtown there is the Oldest Postbox in South Africa. Several malaria-free Game Reserves nearby offer Day visits. So theres a lot to see in the area.
