A farm style country retreat under thatch with country cottage decor set in 100 acres of wooded countryside in the Drakensberg foothills. Built of stone in 1850 as a coach house and also used during the Boer war (1900) as barracks for British troops, one is reminded of a world that has slipped by. Set in a picturesque English country garden with a lake and park like surroundings, what can be more peaceful than just sitting around and watching the ever changing view of the mountains. Enjoy bird watching, fishing or cooling off in the crystal clear pool after a day's outing.

The decor is reminiscent of an age gone by; tranquility nourishes the soul and enhances the memory of time visited. GUESTS have a choice of 26 traditional rooms, all with upcountry cottage décor and all under thatch - being warm in winter and cool in summer. Or we have 24 new ‘executive’ rooms, all with the modern features, private patios, and each with an amazing view of the Berg. The Restaurant, which has a very cozy atmosphere, is where guests spend quite some time and we have endeavoured to make it an all round experience, good food, good decor and quality music.

A host of recreational facilities are on offer, such as swimming, horse riding, croquet, volley ball, badminton, darts, snooker and walks on the property. There are over 180 species of bird to spot as well as canoeing and Florida Bass in the lake. Sandford is situated in the foothills of the premier tourist attraction in South Africa, namely the uKhahlamba-Drakensberg Park. A World Heritage site, consisting of formidable mountain rangeswith overwhelming scenic beauty, fauna and flora and San rock paintings. Close to the famous 'Amphiteatre' and Royal National Park, where spectacular views, hiking, horse riding, birding & trout fishing can be enjoyed. Close by is the Spionkop game reserve, where because of it's unique size good game viewing is possible all year round. Next to the Spionkop game reserve is well known battlefield of Spionkop and a little further the historic siege of Ladysmith.
