Amakhala
Safari Lodge is surely the luxurious way to experience the game parks
of the Eastern Cape. Beds, equipped with mosquito nets, are
super-comfortable and there’s a sofa area inside each thatched hut
whose canvas fronts and terraces look onto the valley brush and the
waterhole below. The bedrooms and the communal hut are decorated with
Cape antiques and furniture carved from the wood on Mike’s farm. Mike
and Justine aren’t always at the camp, but Jaco and Rian, their
rangers, are sure to take good care of you.
After
a delicious meal – usually served round the fire outside – and a good
night’s sleep, an early wake-up call takes you to the Addo Elephant
National Park to admire its ponderous pachyderms at close quarters.
Game drives to Amakhala Game Reserve follow in the afternoon, with its
beautiful and varied scenery of bushveld, savannah, cliffs and
animals… lots of animals. Lions should have been introduced into a
separate section of the reserve by the time you read this and then the
‘big five’ will be complete.
Day trips to the neighbouring Shamwari Game Reserve are included in a 3-day package.
