once the seat of an independent republic. Behind the Drostdy Nick and
Ilzebet Oosthuizen own and run a small hotel with the magical name of
Roosje van de Kaap - Accommodation in
Swellendam, Western Cape.The main building of Roosje van de
Kaap was once a part of the historic Drostdy. Here Nick and Ilzebet
created a beautiful inn and an award winning restaurant.

The
terrace of the main building looks out onto the Drostdy estate where a
flock of sheep, a living exhibit with an ancestry older than 3000
years, graze under the oak trees.Three rooms are
situated around a sparkling pool, which offers guests a cool relief
from the reliable Swellendam sun.The poolcourt flows to the garden and
the four garden rooms.The garden, with its lush indigenous vegetation,
enjoys vistas of the imposing Langeberg Mountains and affords privacy
to the rooms.
If
you like walking and hiking then you will be spoilt for choice in the
Overberg region. Nearest to Swellendam is Marloth Nature Reserve –
home to the six-day Swellendam Trail though you can go for much
shorter walks than this! Spring is the best time to enjoy the
colourful and varied display of fynbos.A little further afield lies
Grootvadersbosch near Heidelberg with its 250 ha of indigenous forests
and bird hides.There are many and varied activities at the nearby
Breede River, including Felix Unite River Adventures, Walkabout (again
on the Breede River), Buffeljachts Watersport (on the Dam a few km
