Penwarn Country Lodge Accommodation in the Southern Drakensberg near Underberg, South Africa is simply fantastic. There are two places to stay here.The main lodge was converted from an old sandstone dairy and fertilizer shed into colourful sitting rooms, a bar and wonderfully comfortable bedrooms. And then there is magnificent Mthini Lodge complete with wooden deck overlooking the main dam, grazing game, horses, cattle and the mountains beyond. The list of things to do at Penwarn is exhaustive (and exhausting!): trout fishing on dams and rivers (lessons and rods provided); tubing on fast-flowing rivers or swimming in pools fed by waterfalls; bird-watching (lammerguyers may join you at the Vulture Restaurant); mountaineering or abseiling (tricky cliffs everywhere); and game drives where tame eland will approach you, and if you go on a horse you can ride right through the herds of zebra and wildebeest.

Some find it all so exciting they get married here! Peta and her staff (or family, I couldn’t tell) are great fun. Finally a mention for TV celebrity Nimrod, a (very) tame otter partial to sausages, dog wrestling and baths (close the door or he’ll be in yours!). I for one won’t forget canoeing by moonlight on the lily-filled dam (not eight metres from my room) with an otter playing beside me. Penwarn is a magical and brilliant place. All meals included.

Imagine the early morning mist lifting off a berg river, the trout rising... Penwarn is a premier fishing location with seven dams (one is two kilometres long) and eight kilometres of river, and 6-9 pounders are regularly hooked.
Five dams are stocked from our own trout hatchery and two are bass dams. We will supply boats and rods, and arrange a fishing clinic for those who wish to perfect the art of fly-fishing.
There is plenty to do in the area too. Walks in the Drakensberg mountains, visits to bushman paintings, horse trails though a private game reserve, canoe trips, canopy tours and the Midlands Meander to mention but a few.
