Jamie was in the British army for many years and memorabilia pops up at Oaklands in flags and prints. He also runs very popular tours to the nearby Boer War battlefields - but there is no regimentation at Oaklands. The colonial manor, with its original Oregon pine floors and ceilings, is now an intimate country hotel set in 260 acres of heavenly highveld countryside, once home to San tribesmen (see their rock paintings) and still the favoured beat for 185 species of bird. Oaklands Country Manor has a balustraded pool and a tennis court (with umpire’s chair to provoke argument), a games room, mountain bikes… and all that fresh mountain air will put them to sleep should they ever sit down. The stone-walled rooms are fun, converted from old stables and outbuildings. All are different in style, but consistent themes are the colourful duvet covers, bright African art and stunning views from the patios.

You are out in the wilds here among mountains, craggy cliffs and paddocks full of galloping horses. The Oaklands pub is renowned for its warm atmosphere and the meals are superb to boot.
There is plenty to do in the area too. Walks in the Drakensberg mountains, visits to bushman paintings, horse trails to mention but a few. 

So if your looking for a place where art, beauty and time away are important then Oaklands Country Manor is worth a second third look.
