Mount Sheba Country Lodge - Accommodation
near Pilgrims Rest, Mpumalanga, South Africa
This
spectacular, thatched hotel in the heart of a conservancy, hugging the
slopes of the towering Mount Sheba near Pilgrim's Rest, invites you to
savour the crisp air on a walk through the indigenous rainforest. Enjoy
squash or tennis, hook a trout, or relax in the sauna or pool. With a
blend of fine dining, good wines and comfortable suites with open
fireplaces, Mount Sheba beckons. One of the finest of Southern Africa's
country hotels, and one of the most beautifully positioned: it lies in
the valley far beneath the crest of Mount Sheba massif in the Transvaal
Drakensberg, surrounded on all sides by steep slopes carpeted by
evergreen trees - dense, lush and lovely. First impressions are of
whitewashed walls, generous expanses of thatch and elegant symmetry, the
whole surrounded by trim lawns and, beyond and around, the great green
mantle of woodland rising tier upon tier - a stunning setting.

With
twenty five suites to choose from, Mount Sheba Country Lodge offers
all the necessary trimmings needed for that refined, well earned,
relaxed getaway. For those who appreciate the quiet life, there is the
luxury of the suites with blazing fireplaces, private patios and
panoramic views, or the solarium to while away unhurried, leisurely
morning hours. As the day ends and you stroll under the thatched eaves
taking in the millions of evening sounds and scents of the slumbering
Mount Sheba, your thoughts may drift to tomorrow's trout fishing, a
game of tennis, a walk or simply lazing in the sun at the swimming
pool.
Then
there's the Mount Sheba forest reserve all around you - it's a joy to
walk the paths. They are well signposted; many of the trees have been
numbered for identification; recommended walks range from the gentle
Golagola to the five-kilometre stroll to. Marco's Mantle, which is a
rather lovely waterfall. Most strenuous is the hike to the trout and
aloe pools: this involves steep slopes and wonderful views of gorge
and water. The hotel also lays on game-viewing and nature drives in a
specially converted land rover. The hotel has a pleasant swimming
pool, together with the Prospector pool-deck bar (open all day; tables
set out for breakfast and lunch), a sauna and solarium, tennis and
squash courts, and a snooker table. Trout fishing and golf are
available in the area. There are no newspapers, no radio and no
television - but here, you don't really need them. The Kruger National
Park is a little over an hour's drive away; the historic mining town
of Pilgrim's Rest, an evocative living museum with lovingly restored
buildings reflecting the period 1880 to 1915, just up the hill and
down the road. Guided tours around the village is available.
