Makakatana
Bay Lodge - Accommodation at the North Coast from
KwaZulu-Natal is sensational.
To
show every aspect of the lodge it is important to
have a look at the gleaming wooden interiors;
the bedrooms (including the wonderful new honeymoon suite),
connected by walkways through the forest, with their gargantuan
slabs of glass and warm, earthy African colours; the pool encased
in decking and raised above the grasses of the wetlands; the lake
itself and the extraordinary St Lucia waterways.

Guests
are taken on pole-driven safaris in mokoro canoes, searching for birds
(360 species!), crocodiles and hippos. You can also take a boat trip
across the lake for lunch on the beach or a game drive to a nearby
reserve before returning to a sumptuous dinner with your hosts in the
outdoor boma. The family’s old ‘Crab House’ is the only part of the
lodge not raised above the tall grasses. This was once a storeroom for
crabs caught in the lake, now a wine cellar with a giant tree growing
out of its roof. Huge sliding doors throughout the lodge open onto
wooden decks with views over the lake, and the absence of railings
just adds to the feeling of openness to nature. From the wooden Swazi
tortoise holding open the front door, Hugh and Leigh-Ann will have you
hooked. The lodge is beautifully welded to its environment. An
absolute treat
Makakatana
bay lodge is the only privately owned lodge set with the Greater St.
Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site, the heart of Africa's largest
natural estuary.
The Greater St. Lucia Wetland Park World Heritage Site is one of the
few natural wonders left on earth where there are unspoilt wilderness
beaches, vast wetlands and game reserves all combined into one reserve.
