The Loerie Hide - Accommodation in Eastern Cape.You would never have guessed that there could be such a garden in the middle of East London. For behind the urban facade lies a densely-forested river valley. The garden plunges down to the Nahoon river and steep paths pick their way down through jungly vegetation full of trees that come straight from Tolkien… Dragon trees, Num-nums, River Euphorbia, Sneezewood and Quar to name but a few.

The trees of the valley are a natural aviary and if you’re lucky, the flamboyant and lumbering loerie may be seen hopping around in the branches. Guests sleep in three units (two thatched) around the pool with a fourth self-catering option adjoined to the house. The styles are African (leopard and zebra skin prints, cane furniture) or rustic-cosy (brass bed, thatch, antiques, stone floor).

The birds, meanwhile, get busy washing themselves in a bath made from an old grinding stone. Breakfast is served up on a wooden deck attached to the main house, where bougainvillea spills over the balcony and shade is provided by large umbrellas.
