Leliekloof Valley of Art - Accommodation in
Burgersdorp, Eastern Cape what
a place! Magnificent Bushman art and high-altitude wilderness to
nourish the soul; log fires and home-cooked meals to look after
earthier parts. Dries and Minnie have landed on their feet at
Leliekloof, a farm adjoining their own property which they acquired a
few years ago. The river here has chiselled a tortuous gorge through
the sandstone and ironstone hills and the many caves host thirteen
remarkable sites of Bushman art, many of the paintings of
indeterminable age.

Dries
may take you for an exhilarating morning drive
and you visited two of them, Eland and Dog
Caves. The quality of the paintings is superb, Dries a full reservoir
of information about both the images and their artists. There is also
a two-day scenic 19-kilometre hike around the valley, and a large dam
for canoeing and trout fishing. Art apart, the countryside will
extract from you superlatives you never knew you had.
Single
guests usually stay, for reasons of sociability, at the De Klerks’
farm, while others have the run of Leliekloof House nearer the valley.
The magnificent main room is 22 metres long, with sitting area,
yellowwood bar, fireplace and huge antique Oregon pine dining table.
You can self-cater, but given the stellar quality of Minnie’s food
(and the variety of things to do), we strongly
suggest that you ask her to prepare your meals. Two nights minimum
stay recommended.
