Hops Hollow Country House
- Accommodation
by Lydenburg, Mpumalanga, South Africa is the
highest brewery in South Africa. Hops Hollow combines the warmest of
welcomes with home-made beers, scrumptious meals and a picturesque
setting. There is something rather Scottish about the scenery
surrounding this guest-house high on the Long Tom Pass, with its
mountains, mist and crisp air. The area has many Boer War and
gold-rush connections and Theo will tell you about both historical and
natural wonders. Following a Damascene conversion one moonlit night he
gave up clerical work for life in conservation and has never looked
back. When not at his day job with the Mpumalanga Parks Board he’s a
proper microbrewer (suppy your own ‘De Beer’ pun) and loves showing
guests around his brewery.

A
rather baronial pub with vast columns made from old railway sleepers
was completed in 2003. Sarie, meanwhile, is the force behind the guest
house whose bedrooms have thick duvets and large cushions and, in some
cases, views best appreciated from the pillow. She is also a wonderful
cook (lots of beer in the recipes) and her breakfasts are super
special, a 3-course meal in themselves.This small twin-pronged
business is a delight, for ale-lovers and otherwise.
Our
comfortable, sumptuous and beautifully appointed bedrooms are all en
suite. Here at Hops Hollow, we strive to make you feel at home, and
invite you to relax and enjoy the positive energy of our home.
Kölschbier originated in the town of Köln where a guild of brewers
have been active since 1254. This German ale is generally considered
as being as close to a Pils as ale can be. Diggers Draught is brewed
to approximate the same standards as a true Kölsch. As it is one of
the very few beers in the world whose name is protected legally and in
respect to the appellation contrôllée that the Köloners instituted to
preserve the identity of their creation, Diggers Draft is called a
“Kolsch style Ale”.
