Hluhluwe
River Lodge the Accommodation in St Lucia, KwaZulu-Natal is
sensational. A short drive through dense bushveld takes you to
this friendly, informal lodge at the end of a sandy track on the
shores of beautiful Lake St Lucia. Just drop
things off in your wood-and-thatch chalet and making your way to the
big deck, the centrepiece of the lodge, for a drink and some
orientation. The view is straight across the Hluhluwe River flood

There
is a pool lost in the trees near the Zulu boma (for evening braais),
but most will want to make full use of the all-seeing, all-knowing
guides (including Gavin himself) who will take you exploring in this
remarkable region. The
river is just there for canoe safaris (hippo, croc, birds beyond
counting) in the channels and boat trips around the lake (where you
can see all sorts of land game coming in to drink). There are game
drives through the surrounding sand forests of the Wetland Park, but
Hluhluwe Umfolozi Park is not far away either.
You
can also go on botanical trips or guided walks to old fossil banks and
(astounding) bird-watching excursions in the park. Whatever you choose
this is an intimate, sociable place, where small numbers and very
knowledgeable guides make the experience personal and rewarding. The
focus is on the topography, the bird life and the wetland environment
as a whole, rather than just the ‘Big Five’.
