Farm 215 - Accommodation in
Fynbos Reserve near Gansbaai, Western Cape the
whale coast between Hermanus and Cape Agulhas is one of the most
beautiful shores, not only of the Western Cape, but of South Africa.
What happens in the mountains and hills of the Overberg a few
kilometres inland is something that escapes the hasty tourists; farm
215 is a retreat for the non-hasty. From Gansbaai to the guesthouse of
farm 215 it is a 20 minute drive on the gravel road to
Baardskeerderbos and Elim. The guest house can be seen from far: lonely
and kind of imposing on top of its hill. It is a warmly welcoming
Western Cape accommodation and gladly shares with you its views on
this unspoilt part of the Southern Overberg. Look down from the guest
house to the west and you'll see the blue water of the large
Kraaiboschdam in stark contrast with the green of the surrounding
vineyards. Look to the South and you'll see the white sandy shoreline
and the ocean beyond the Agulhas plains. Look to the North and you'll
see repeating rows of hills and mountains (a feature the Southern
Overberg is famous for). With all that visual violence out there, the
place is gracefully peaceful and without clutter. Yet nothing is
missing.

The
big rooms have king-size beds with white cotton linen and a big bunch of
white goose down filled pillows. So close to the Artic, temperatures can
suddenly change and a set of goose down filled duvets and cotton blankets
cater for all surprises of the Western Cape weather. The rooms have a
separate space with a dining table, comfortable reading chairs,
bathrooms-en-suite with bath and seperate shower. Lighting is designed to
please enthusiastic readers and wooden shutters will satisfy our guests
that want to sleep late (it does spoil the view though). The rooms have
their own CD-player and guests are welcome to pick out of the extensive
CD-collection in the lounge. There is no television, neither in the
rooms, nor in the lounge. Farm 215 is not a place for televisions. There
is, however, an extensive book-collection on many subjects, but with a
certain bias to nature and conservation.
Farm
215 has an extensive infrastructure of hiking trails and farm roads of
over 20 kilometres, which you can explore on your own or with one of
our guides (on foot or by 4x4), specialised in the fynbos of the
Southern Overberg. Some of the gentler hiking trails take you up to
the mountain ridges allowing for stunning views of the Overberg
mountains, the Agulhas plains, the estuary of Uilenkraalsmond, the
vineyards surrounding Kraaiboschdam and the Atlantic ocean, guarded by
the light house of Danger Point . Other hiking trails, less suitable
for the fainthearted, take you down into the coolness of the kloofs
where your feet get wet, navigation gets difficult and animals (unseen
by you) watch you from the safety of their caves. Due to dramatically
different heights, different soil-types, shaded and damp mountain
faces, dry and windy slopes and nature's generosity to the Overberg,
the fynbos reserve of farm 215 boasts a multitude of different
habitats and -hence- an enormous amount of different plant species. In
the past, agriculture on farm 215 was restricted to a few suitable
places. The largest part of this fynbos reserve has therefore always
been safeguarded against the hand of man. We would like to keep it
that way; only our guests and a restricted amount of permit holders
have right of access to the reserve. Enjoy hiking in South Africa at
its best!
