The Elephant House - Accommodation in
Addo, Eastern Cape, South
Africa
The
bush telegraph gave advance notice of the many charms at Elephant House
the
Accommodation in
Addo, Eastern Cape, South
Africa. It’s a stunning house, the brainchild of one night’s sleepless
pondering by Anne who mapped the whole thing out in her head – a small
lawned courtyard surrounded on three sides by thatched and shady
verandah. The house is in a sense inside out. The drawing room leads
to a dining room outside on the verandah (with antiques and Persian
rugs). All the bedrooms open onto the verandah too and dinner
(advertised with an African gong) is served there on silver and
crystal. Evening meals are lit to stunning effect with lampshades made
of Tuareg bowls.

Lawns, indigenous trees and the racehorse stud (Clive used to run one
in Natal too) surround the house. The bedrooms
are luxurious with antique furniture, carpets, thick duvets and deep
beds; and morning tea or coffee is brought to your bed, if so desired.
There is also the Stable Cottage, which, separate from the main house,
retains the same charm, just a little cosier, and you can prepare your
own Continental breakfast under the vines in your private garden.
The
Elephant House Safari Co. is the in-house safari division where
qualified guides conduct excellent daily game drives into the Addo
Elephant Park on open Land Cruisers as well as cultural, historical &
agricultural tours in the valley. Other options include horseback
safaris into Addo, a helicopter trip to the beach and day visits to
the various private game reserves in the area. Kirkwood, which has a
beautiful golf course, is a 30km drive through the valley.
