five minutes walk away are the chic, arty restaurants, bars and
cadeaux boutiques of Melville where you can spend a day perusing
the second-hand book stores, drinking coffee and watching the beau
monde strut by. If you’re looking to just chill out in the
evening, buy a healthy frozen meal from Wild Olive delicatessen
and heat it in your microwave. Then take your meal out into the
private courtyard with its tinkling water and a mural wall painted
by Margaret’s artist daughter.

 The
building is brand new. The favourite was the
upstairs Manhattan-style suite, with its wooden floor, orchid in the
corner, large, square, engraved headboard, individual sofas and doors
leading onto the patio shaded by a parasol. But all the suites are
stylish, spacious and well-thought-out, with pristine bathrooms and
tasteful contemporary furnishings and pictures on the walls. There is
controlled lighting, heating, fans, microwave, mini-oven with hobs,
and a fridge.
 The
patios at the back are a little bigger with delicate flowerbeds and
the other upstairs room, the only one with no outside area, has a
romantic four-poster bed and a red, curvaceous sofa. Breakfasts are
served in your rooms.
The Melville Koppies and nature reserve, Emmarentia
Dam, tennis courts and an 18 hole golf course are close by. Melville
hosts many art galleries, craft shops, theatre supper club, Bass Line
- home to good African Jazz, trendy boutiques and coffee bars.
