Broadlands Country House - Accommodation in
Kirkwood,
Eastern Cape, South Africa
Broadlands
Country House had you won over before you
had even negotiated the drive through Kirkwood in the
Eastern
Cape. Citrus orchards on either side, an
avenue of palm trees, pink, purple and orange bougainvillaea, roses in
profusion, an explosion of colour. The sweet aroma of nectar filled
the country air. The lake opening out from the house overhung by
weeping willows and orange grevillias beyond made you
munching on home-made cookies all the more pleasurable.
You can imagine the serenity at night, with the
lanterns lit at the end of the deck and light dancing on the water.

The
farm here has been in the family since 1885 and apart from the
thousands of citrus trees and the pack-house, it looked quite
different back then. Today, luxury rooms with chaise-longues,
Victorian baths and an anglicised sitting room and fireplaces provide
well-appreciated comfort. Freshly-squeezed orange juice for breakfast
is, of course, a certainty.
Never-ending gardens around a dam and swimming pool create the
true country feeling.
The house is just 25 minutes drive from the Addo
Elephant Park and for
an African bush experience in the real Africa, Rob will take you up to
his nearby mountain lodge for a night spent in the wilderness with
sounds of the wild experienced from the traditional boma.
Alternatively he’ll take you on a sundowner game drive amongst kudu,
nyala and zebra.
