Berluda - Accommodation in
Schoemanshoek, Western Cape. For the complete Schoemanshoek
Experience, a stay with the Schoeman family is essential. Berluda
B&B (4 star) is run by Rosie Schoeman. Here the old saying
“arrive as stranger and leaved as a friend” takes on a new
meaning. Rosie is renowned for her warm hospitality and great
attention to detail, and judging by the amount of return visits, she
has struck a chord. We have three fully equipped en-suite rooms and
two family units. (TV, M-Net, Hairdryer, Sherry tray, Tea and Coffee
facilities).

The
farm house offers guests their own lounge/reading room, with
complimentary sherry, beer and coffee or tea with refreshments on
arrival. Fresh flowers from the garden add an extra special touch to the
house. The individually decorated rooms are furnished with beautiful
antiques and offer all the modern amenities. Berluda offers beautiful
spacious gardens and a sparkling swimming pool for the hot summer days
(of which we have over 350 per year!). On the veranda guests can enjoy
relaxing afternoons or go for a walk in the surrounding hills. Our guests
awake to Rosie’s famous farm style breakfast served in the dining room
or on the veranda overlooking the garden. The Schoemans (after which
Schoemanshoek is named) were one of the first families to settle here and
Rosie takes great pleasure in sharing the rich history with her guests.
Only
15km north of Berluda, lies the world famous Cango Caves. These enormous
caves take you to an underworld only imaginable. Only a very small part
of the cave system is open to the public, but for the curious, a video
will take you on an underground journey where very few humans have set
foot. Take a drive further towards the north and reach the magnificent
Swartberg Mountain Range, after only a few kilometres. In 1886, the
renowned road builder, Thomas Bain, took on the enormous task of
constructing a pass over the 1500m high mountains. Today, the Swartberg
Pass has been declared a national monument, and remains as Bains and his
team left it over a hundred years ago. At the top of the pass, an awesome
view awaits you: hundreds of kilometers of Great Karoo, and a winding
road that takes you down to one of the undiscovered secrets of our
valley, the quaint little town of Prinz Albert. For the adventurous,
however, try the turn off towards The Hell (Gamkaskloof). The two hour
drive brings you into a valley as hot as hell, and as desolate as the
moon. It is here where the lost white tribe was “discovered” after
almost two hundred years of isolation. Today, it is developing into a
must-see stopover. For those not daring to take on the winding and
twisting road themselves, guided tours will take you on a day trip where
you can sit back and relax, enjoying the view and the picnic in one of
the most awesome surroundings in South Africa.
