The name Tongaat was derived from the Tongaat River, the Zulu word for the Strychmos macheni trees, which flourish on it’s banks. The N4 North bound to Tongaat runs along a scenic stretch of unspoilt beaches i.e. La Mercy Beach, Casuarine and Westbrook Beach. Attractions in Tongaat includes the beautiful Amanzimnyama Park and the Braek Village Temple which holds one of the largest Kavady Festivals during the Easter period. The town is the centre for Tongaat Sugar Estates.

TUGELA MOUTH

This is a desolate, unspoilt stretch of coastline, with the settlement consisting mainly of fishermen’s cottages and a caravan park offering some attractive camp sites. The Harolds Johnson Nature Reserve is situated near the mouth of the Tugela River.
