Situated on the banks of the Vaal River, the pleasant town of Standerton was founded in 1876 and named for the original owner of the farm Grootverlangen, Comdt AH Standere. The 1641 m high Stander’s Kop and the site of the first fording place across the river were also named after him. General Louis Botha, the first Prime Minister of the Union of South Africa, once farmed in the district. There is a textile industry, a power station, coal mine, sorghum beer brewery and a strong agricultural industry and raw milk processing plant. Facilities for water sport and camping have been developed on the banks of the Grootdraai Dam, 10 km from town, while a nature reserve has been established at Stander’s Kop.
