Location: South Africa » North West » Schweizer-Reneke

As far back as 1874 Schweizser-Reneke was called Mamusa, but later on the town was named after Captain CA Schweizser and Field cornet CM Reneke who were killed on 2 December 1885 during the Koranna War. Nine civilians who were also killed in this war were buried in the Schweizser-Reneke cemetery together with the two officers. Photographs of the two men, together with a selection of other interesting historic photographs may be seen in the city hall. Among the historic monuments in Schweizser-Reneke there is a Voortrekker Monument erected in 1938, a memorial library for victims of the Second World War and the Republic Monument. Schweizser-Reneke is also the home of prehistoric treasures like Bushman paintings (San Rock Art) with an estimated age of 20 000 years. For those interested in history, there is the old home of the former President of Stellaland, the first Dutch Reformed Church building in the old Transvaal and the remnants of the Koranna kraals at Massoukop. Today it seems difficult to associate such a peaceful place with the bloody Koranna wars and other historic dramas. Despite it's historic heritage, Schweizser-Reneke succeeded in keeping pace with modern development, as is evident from the flourishing maize farming activities of which a gigantic elevator, true to the North West Province, is proof. Schweizser-Reneke's main tourist attraction however, is the Wentzel Dam offering excellent fishing and numerous water sport and picnic facilities.
