Petrus Steyn a town in the Free State Province

Petrus Steyn was established on a farm in 1914 and named after the farm owner. Petrus Steyn is a small farming town between Tweeling and Kroonstad in the Free State province of South Africa.

 

Established on the farm Sterkfrontein in 1912, Petrus Steyn is located in a major wheat and maize producing region. Petrus Steyn, the Free State town highest above sea level (1702 m), is dominated by one of the biggest co-operative grain silo’s in the Free State. The Wagon Wheel Monument on the Dirkie Uys Square commemorates the Great Trek of 1838. Ox wagon tracks dating from this period are preserved in a slab of cement.

Dutch Reformed Mission Church

About 11 km from town on the R707 to Frankfort. This annual church is known as The Crossroads (‘Die Kruispad”) and was originally a house built before the Anglo Boer War. The christening font is fashioned from a petrified tree trunk.
