Africa is an unpretentious B&B and an absolute delight. This
has everything to do with Monica’s warm hospitality and the character
of her home, built 20 years ago, though the beachside location is an
added bonus. A cuppa appears on arrival and you are then shown up to
your quarters, two large rooms under a high thatched roof, with a living
area between them, all looking out to sea. The aloe-filled back garden
is a bird-watcher’s paradise where even the neighbours pop over for
the viewing.

The
front garden has weaver-birds’ nests in the trees and possibly Africa’s
most southerly baobab tree, a tenacious little thing brought down from
Zimbabwe by
the family in the ‘80s. And on the other side of the garden there is
another separate flat, which can be rented on a B&B basis or as
a self-catering unit (but you’d be missing out on an unforgettable breakfast
of delicious home-made breads, scones, jams and all…).
It
lacks the sea views, so Monica feels duty-bound to offer it at
give-away
prices. With a sweeping vista across St Francis Bay, where southern right
whales can be seen in season and dolphins year round, you cannot fail to
relax here. Keen surfers will be interested to note (they will in fact
salivate over the news) that Bruce’s Beauties are at the end of the
garden
There
are lovely views from all the bedrooms, ideal for dolphin and whale
watching. Watch the Dolphins from your bed. Take
a walk on the beautiful beach.
St. Francis Bay is a delightful seaside village of whitewashed
thatched houses.
